Introduction
This
short course helps participants to
develop the knowledge and skills required for
exploring, mining or researching in volcanic terrains.
It
combines fundamental information on how volcanoes work and what they
produce, and practical information on
how
to name, describe and log volcanic facies in the field and in drill
core. The relationships between volcanic and ore forming processes are
reviewed for important volcanic-associated ore deposit types (VMS,
epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au, komatiite-hosted Ni, kimberlite-hosted
diamonds).
Course Format and Delivery
The short course will
run for
2 full
days ONLINE.
Lectures will cover
all kinds of volcanoes, eruption styles and products on land and under water, effects of hydrothermal alteration on volcanic rocks,
and breccias in mineralised volcanic environments. There are Naming and Breccia exercises
in smaller groups as well.
Who should attend
This course is intended for geologists engaged in regional- or
deposit-scale mapping or in drilling programs in volcanic successions
(including those on the modern sea floor) for the purpose of mineral
exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au, komatiite
Ni, or diamonds) and for geological survey geologists embarking on
mapping projects in volcanic successions. No prior volcanology training
is required.

Past Course Comments:
"Jocelyn has an unrivaled ability to explain and describe
igneous/volcanic rocks and the genetic processes that created them.
During my undergraduate studies I read several of her papers which I
learnt much from. However, having her in the room is so much better.
Thanks for the course, I got more out of a couple of days with her than
a semester of undergrad."
The course organization, materials and presentation were absolutely
fantastic. Image-rich, the way geology shortcourses should be.
The knowledge and command of the instructor was excellent. Course
organization was very professional.
I was blown away by the course, really something special. I was first a
bit sceptic how the webinar course format would work with this kind of
subject but really it didn’t matter at all. And, that’s because of the
top‐class lecturer. McPhie and the professional organization team of
KLS. Thanks to all of you and I certainly will promote this course to my
colleagues. The knowledge of the instructor and the shared
material are invaluable. All the explanations were very clear, useful
and this has been a great investment in my career as an exploration
geologist who works in differents countries and enviroments around the
world. Thank you all! Dr. McPhie was very
knowledgeable in the material and communicated the information easily
and efficiently.
Course notes were good quality and
information packed.
I think the way the course was broken
down into different concepts for each lecture worked well.
I loved this shortcourse and was a
fantastic refresher for those of us that work in volcanic terranes.
I learned a lot of new things that will
be useful on a go-forward basis.
The four day format worked well since
from my perspective, it allowed me to also keep up with my work duties
in the morning before the course started each day. This course is a good
overall review of volcanology for exploration professionals. The
course material is well organized and
Jocelyn is a patient and knowledgeable instructor. I felt like this was
all stuff I essentially knew, but hadnt thought of in a while, and it
was particularly concise and to the point demonstrating all of the
appropriate components and their relationships. I enjoyed the breakdown
of the class into 4 hour segments, allowing time for other work to occur
and not exceeding my attention span.
The course material is very well organized and
assists to understand the subjects. The instructor has full knowledge of
the course subjects and has the good ability to explain subjects in a
simple way. Course material was excellent and presented in an
easy to follow systematic method. Dr. Jocelyn McPhie's impressive
knowledge and ability to deliver it to the class as key concepts and
points was very well done. Course was very well organized. Strengths of the course
included: "A systematic approach to describe volcanic rocks. A clear
distinction between descriptive and genetic terminology. The information
on the morphology of active volcanoes." Excellent quality,
covered good topics, good balance of detailed features and bigger
picture concepts. The rock naming components were most useful. Fantastic
job, I have been looking forward to this course for a few years. Great material;
knowledgeable; well spoken and well paced. The course was very
useful and interactive. The main points came through and the repetition
of the main aspects was very useful. Excellent course!
All questions were answered clearly and
concisely. Topics were presented in a very practical, and straight
forward manner that will be easily applicable in the field. I really
enjoyed the hands-on breccia identification as well as the picture
identification illustrating
important textures. I've learned important, subtle textures to be
looking for in volcanic rocks.
Course content was well organized
and structured to facilitate
introduction to more detailed
and advanced concpets. Jocelyn was very
knowledgeable and clearly delivered the content at a good pace. Handbook
and content easy to follow.
The course was very well organized. I found
the content extremely useful and applicable.
Very clear organization and structure.
Instructor's expertise on volcanic rocks essential to the course. Able
to communicate complex concepts in a simple way.
This course provided a much needed and simple
framework for organizing the myriad of volcanic terms. It unleashed the
mystery of many features I have seen but was never able to describe. The
rock and breccia description exercises were extremely valuable. Excellent Instructor. Excellent material
organization. I really
enjoyed the field component of the course and the lecture component
provided all technical information to understand the field component.
Amazing instructor. Well
prepared. Excellent visual materials. Good logistics and organization.
Fantastic course. Very
informative, easy to digest, and builds a much greater understanding of
volcanic processes & results. Pretty impressive,
McPhie's presentation is so clear and easily understandable. KLS -
Thanks for doing these geological meetings (Everything was so good!!) Great course, very
informative. Essential for anyone working in volcanic environments.
Jocelyn's expertise and enthusiasm on the subject were apparent
throughout her clear and engaging delivery of the course material. Very clear, well-paced,
consistent presentations. For two days we covered a good range of topics
without too much detail and covering the full range of applicable
topics. The time taken for hands
on and interactive problem solving / rock naming was extremly valuable.
The way the course was laid out was also very logical and the instructor
was excellent at making all topics easy to digest. This course was amazing!
Jocelyn is a very talented volcanologist & a great instructor.
This course is extremely valuable for a mapping geologist or core-logger
& very applicable to mineral exploration. The hands on exercise and
detailed time spent classifying/naming real rocks is very helpful. The material for the
course, instructor and the organization was excellent. Material will be
very useful for my future work, as well as in the University for the
teaching of students and for the scientific work as for the description
and interpretation volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks in the altered
areas, which is always problematic. Also it was a very good mix of the
lectures and field trips. Drill core observations and interpretations
was a very good and useful lessons for the company's geologists. The strengths of the
instructor go without comment. One of the best professors I have had.
The course material was very well designed, focused, easy to follow and
will be a valued reference. The course was very well organized,
everything ran on time (even the field parts, which can prove
difficult), the stops were pertinent and enough time was spent at each
to fully understand the concepts presented. Good venue, as well, very
comfortable. |
