Course introduction Structural geology controls the majority of economic mineral deposits. The key to obtaining exploration and mining benefits is to find out the structural geological controls of those deposits. Brett’s work with exploration and mining companies in numerous tectonic terranes globally revealed a need for a comprehensive structural geological training program that could demonstrate the practical application of procedures and skills at all experience levels. This has resulted in the compilation of a benchmark training course that has been conducted in numerous countries. The course demonstrates the pragmatic use of structural geology skills for mining and exploration at all scales.

Course format The course comprises a series of modules that integrate to provide a logical sequence from basic structural geological processes through to their controls on fluids and development of mineral systems. Modules are given as individual PowerPoint presentations and combine to give two days of presentation and discussion. The format is free-flowing with discussion encouraged throughout.

Who should attend Any field and mine geologists working with mineral systems hosted in deformed rocks. The course serves as a retraining environment and a platform to upskill existing structural geological knowledge.

Dr. Brett Davis  is widely regarded in the exploration and mining industry for his application of applied structural geology to numerous commodity types and mineral deposit styles. The approach Brett has brought to understanding mineralising environments globally is a product of the integration of modern structural geology and techniques married with several decades of applied research. Brett’s work with exploration and mining companies in numerous tectonic terranes revealed a need for a comprehensive structural geological training program that could demonstrate the practical application of procedures and skills at all experience levels. Brett received a BSc (Hons Class I) from James Cook University (1986) and then worked as a production geologist at Mt Isa Mines before completing a structural geology PhD (1992) at James Cook University. This was followed by six years of applied structural geological postgraduate research before returning to the minerals industry in 1998. Since then, Brett has held a number of technical and managerial roles while maintaining an active research profile. Brett is a founder and principal consultant of Olinda Gold, a multi-commodity, global, structural geological consultancy. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and currently holds an Adjunct Research Fellowship position at James Cook University of North Queensland.
