Past Course Comments:
"Excellent training material and course delivery with clear and
well-prepared field notes and commentary of outcrops. Fantastic outcrop
stops, including use of kayaks for dome facies and morpholog. Course was
very well-organized and run."
"The course was awesome. I can’t wait for the next one!"
"Excited to share my gratitude for the amazing Volcanology Field
Techniques course by Dr. Jocelyn McPhie on the island of Milos-Greece,
which I recently completed. This course is a good overall review
of volcanology with field observations for exploration professionals.
Dr. McPhie was very knowledgeable in the material and communicated the
information easily and efficiently. "
"Dr. Jocelyn McPhie provided an excellent program on Milos, challenging
both younger and grayer attendees to go back to basic field examination
and see the stratigraphy at Milos through a critical eye. The field
locations were ideal for testing the group's knowledge, shared in the
morning presentations, as well as presenting the challenges of assessing
the volcanic environment. The stratigraphy also gives a sobering view of
the nature of volcanoes to those who see them mostly through a drill
hole. Dr. McPhie was patient and engaging and gave ample time for
questions in presentations and in the field.
"Absolutely fantastic course- great engagement and a superb instructor.
Jos is absolutely without doubt the best- her combination of simplicity
and sophistication in describing volcanic rocks is without equal. Rod
was crucial 'local knowledge' and his specialized skills in things like
making a good lunch for a large group in blowing sand were key to the
success of the trip. Course organization and pacing were very good- we
got great time on the outcrop, plenty of time for discussion but no
wasted time milling around either, great job done by all. And kudos to
the drivers for watching out for their group. "
"I found the course to be very well organized in the way that material
was covered and stops were laid out--each stop and day built off the
one(s) that came before. I also really appreciated the learning
environment fostered by the instructor and the other course
participants. It was one that welcomed questions, observations, and
discussions, and one that allowed people from all walks to share their
own knowledge and experiences."
"I really enjoyed the course, lectures and field training. Jocelyn is a
fantastic teacher and geologist. Strongly recommended for understanding
volcanology, terrains, facies and naming."
"The course was one of the most practical and well-organised course that
could be applicable to people struggling in the industries to properly
map out volcanic rocks. It will be very helpful to set up logging
guidelines of volcanic rocks. The instructor has a unique method of
teaching complex geological phenomena in a simple manner. In
general, I would describe the course as one of the best course I ever
had. The choice of the place was perfect because it contains a wide
varieties of the volcanic rocks emplacement and volcanic phenomena. The
timing of the course was also great as it hasn't been in conflict with
the vacation weeks."
"It was a great overview on the different types of volcanoes, eruptions,
and how to recognize the lithified products of volcanoes to identify an
ancient volcanic setting. I found it particularily useful and applicable
to my own work currently. It has led me to think further on how the
ancient environment can affect the emplacement of VMS deposits in
particular (in terms of things like slopes and topography of the
paleoseafloor)- in my company, the mineral deposit we are working on has
only been thought of previously in terms of an orogenic origin- which
seems to me more and more to not be the case. Dr. McPhie presents
clearly and concisely."
"Course material was interesting but not too challenging that you lost
interest. Jocelyn was kind, enthusiatic, and motivating. She delivered
course materials in a clear and concise way which led to little
confusion on the subjects being covered. The naming exercises were a
great break from course material and a good chance to talk with others
in the course about rocks and their experiences. "
"Jocelyn has an unrivaled ability to explain and describe
igneous/volcanic rocks and the genetic processes that created them.
During my undergraduate studies I read several of her papers which I
learnt much from. However, having her in the room is so much better.
Thanks for the course, I got more out of a couple of days with her than
a semester of undergrad."
The course organization, materials and presentation were absolutely
fantastic. Image-rich, the way geology shortcourses should be.
The knowledge and command of the instructor was excellent. Course
organization was very professional.
I was blown away by the course, really something special. I was first a
bit sceptic how the webinar course format would work with this kind of
subject but really it didn’t matter at all. And, that’s because of the
top‐class lecturer. McPhie and the professional organization team of
KLS. Thanks to all of you and I certainly will promote this course to my
colleagues. The knowledge of the instructor and the shared
material are invaluable. All the explanations were very clear, useful
and this has been a great investment in my career as an exploration
geologist who works in differents countries and enviroments around the
world. Thank you all! Dr. McPhie was very
knowledgeable in the material and communicated the information easily
and efficiently.
Course notes were good quality and
information packed.
I think the way the course was broken
down into different concepts for each lecture worked well.
I loved this shortcourse and was a
fantastic refresher for those of us that work in volcanic terranes.
I learned a lot of new things that will
be useful on a go-forward basis.
The four day format worked well since
from my perspective, it allowed me to also keep up with my work duties
in the morning before the course started each day. This course is a good
overall review of volcanology for exploration professionals. The
course material is well organized and
Jocelyn is a patient and knowledgeable instructor. I felt like this was
all stuff I essentially knew, but hadnt thought of in a while, and it
was particularly concise and to the point demonstrating all of the
appropriate components and their relationships. I enjoyed the breakdown
of the class into 4 hour segments, allowing time for other work to occur
and not exceeding my attention span.
The course material is very well organized and
assists to understand the subjects. The instructor has full knowledge of
the course subjects and has the good ability to explain subjects in a
simple way. Course material was excellent and presented in an
easy to follow systematic method. Dr. Jocelyn McPhie's impressive
knowledge and ability to deliver it to the class as key concepts and
points was very well done. Course was very well organized. Strengths of the course
included: "A systematic approach to describe volcanic rocks. A clear
distinction between descriptive and genetic terminology. The information
on the morphology of active volcanoes." Course content was well organized and structered
to facilitate instruction to more detailed & advanced concepts. Jocelyn
was very knowledgeable & clearly delivered the content at a good pace.
Handbook and content easy to follow. Good field trip. Volcanic
examples deposit. All well organized. Very complete all times.
The field days. The expertise of the instructor. Pretty impressive,
McPhie's presentation is so clear and easily understandable. KLS -
Thanks for doing these geological meetings (Everything was so good!!) Great course, very
informative. Essential for anyone working in volcanic environments.
Jocelyn's expertise and enthusiasm on the subject were apparent
throughout her clear and engaging delivery of the course material. Very clear, well-paced,
consistent presentations. For two days we covered a good range of topics
without too much detail and covering the full range of applicable
topics. The time taken for hands
on and interactive problem solving / rock naming was extremly valuable.
The way the course was laid out was also very logical and the instructor
was excellent at making all topics easy to digest. This course was amazing!
Jocelyn is a very talented volcanologist & a great instructor.
This course is extremely valuable for a mapping geologist or core-logger
& very applicable to mineral exploration. The hands on exercise and
detailed time spent classifying/naming real rocks is very helpful. The material for the
course, instructor and the organization was excellent. Material will be
very useful for my future work, as well as in the University for the
teaching of students and for the scientific work as for the description
and interpretation volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks in the altered
areas, which is always problematic. Also it was a very good mix of the
lectures and field trips. Drill core observations and interpretations
was a very good and useful lessons for the company's geologists. The strengths of the
instructor go without comment. One of the best professors I have had.
The course material was very well designed, focused, easy to follow and
will be a valued reference. The course was very well organized,
everything ran on time (even the field parts, which can prove
difficult), the stops were pertinent and enough time was spent at each
to fully understand the concepts presented. Good venue, as well, very
comfortable. |
