Introduction

This field short course helps participants to develop the knowledge and skills required for naming, describing and interpreting volcanic successions. It combines fundamental information on how volcanoes work and what they produce, and practical information on how to name, describe and log volcanic facies in the field.
This course will benefit geologists engaged in regional- or deposit-scale mapping or in drilling programs in volcanic successions for the purpose of mineral exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au). No prior volcanology
geologist training is required.

This intensive, 5 full-days (and a welcome Sunday dinner and Saturday breakfast) field trip will begin in the town of Adamas on the Island of Milos on the evening of Sunday, April 13th and end in the morning in Adamas on Saturday, April 19th, 2025.

Course Format and Delivery

The short course will be led by Dr. Jocelyn McPhie and and assisted by local geologist, Mr Rod Feldtmann. The course will run for 5 full field days throughout the small island, including morning power point lectures and field lectures.  A 1/2 day of sea kayaks will be used to visit outcrops accessible only via the sea. A comprehensive field guide will be provided.

Milos comprises submarine and subaerial, mainly felsic to intermediate volcanic formations, the oldest of which is ~3 Ma. We will examine:

·         Felsic lavas and domes

·         Submarine and subaerial pyroclastic deposits, including diverse pumice breccia and fountain deposits

·         Shallow intrusions and peperite

·         Altered volcanic facies.

Who should attend: This course is intended for geologists engaged in regional- or deposit-scale mapping or in drilling programs in volcanic successions for the purpose of mineral exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au, komatiite Ni, or diamonds) and for geological survey geologists embarking on mapping projects in volcanic successions. No prior volcanology geology training is required.

Reguired equipment and terrain: All participants should bring field boots, a rock-climbing type helmet (or hard hat) with a chin strap, a high visibilty field vest, wind goggles and field type clothing. Most outcrops are accessible via roads or short traverses on foot but some are more involved, hence all participants should be comfortable walking up and down steep traverses with uneven terrain at times for up to 30 minutes at a time. And out in the field for sometimes 1-2 hours at a time.

The course is presented and taught in English.

Milos:
Due to the volcanic origin of its land, Milos has an impressive morphology and thus, a variety of striking beaches found nowhere else in Greece. You will visit both sandy and pebble beaches here, plus beaches with a strange lunar beauty about them that will be find simply breathtaking. In any case, the alluring, crystal clear, clean water of the island and the infinite beauties of its multifaceted beaches offer a totally unprecedented experience. So it is also a great opportunity to stay a few extra days to visit the towns and beaches.

Dr. Jocelyn McPhie  is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tasmania and Principal Consultant in McPhie Volcanology. She is a volcanologist with decades of experience in unravelling the complex geology of volcanic terrains, particularly those that host mineral deposits. She has expertise in textural interpretation of altered volcanic rocks, volcanic facies analysis, volcanic eruption and emplacement processes, and the links between volcanic and hydrothermal processes. She has published more than 110 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, and is senior author of the book, Volcanic Textures, widely used by academic and industry geoscientists working in volcanic successions.

Mr. Rod Feldtmann grew up on a farm in Victoria, Australia. After graduating with a degree in Geology from the University of Wollongong, he worked for 10 years as an Exploration Geologist in Australia, Bolivia and finally on Milos (1996-2000). When his contract as a Geologist came to an end, Rod established Sea Kayak Milos as a means to remain on Milos, sustain his family and enjoy the great outdoors. His wife, Petrinela, comes from a local family and was born and raised on Milos and manages the family operated Kafeneio (Coffee-Ouzo bar) and the Guesthouse business.

Past Course Comments:

"The course was awesome. I can’t wait for the next one!"
-Anonymous  Geologist from Aurora Energy, Milos field course, Greece, April 2024

"Excited to share my gratitude for the amazing Volcanology Field Techniques course by Dr. Jocelyn McPhie on the island of Milos-Greece, which I recently completed.  This course is a good overall review of volcanology with field observations for exploration professionals. Dr. McPhie was very knowledgeable in the material and communicated the information easily and efficiently. "
-Mete T. Beltan, Exploration Manager, Ozifin, Milos field course, Greece, April 2024

"Dr. Jocelyn McPhie provided an excellent program on Milos, challenging both younger and grayer attendees to go back to basic field examination and see the stratigraphy at Milos through a critical eye. The field locations were ideal for testing the group's knowledge, shared in the morning presentations, as well as presenting the challenges of assessing the volcanic environment. The stratigraphy also gives a sobering view of the nature of volcanoes to those who see them mostly through a drill hole. Dr. McPhie was patient and engaging and gave ample time for questions in presentations and in the field.
Rod Feldtmann provided invaluable support to the course and shared his knowledge of Milos' local and mining history as well as providing the novel (and for some, first) kayak traverse.
The course materials were detailed and specific to the island geology and course objectives. There was also plenty of time to get acquainted with new colleagues from across the world.
Course organizer Karie Smith prepared and supported a great week and maintained a watchful eye over the group. She was informative in the lead up to arrival and supportive during our stay. The timing of the course to avoid the tourist rush and beat the summer heat was well done."
-Bill McGuinty, President, OTD Exploration Services, Milos field course, Greece, April 2024

"Absolutely fantastic course- great engagement and a superb instructor. Jos is absolutely without doubt the best- her combination of simplicity and sophistication in describing volcanic rocks is without equal. Rod was crucial 'local knowledge' and his specialized skills in things like making a good lunch for a large group in blowing sand were key to the success of the trip. Course organization and pacing were very good- we got great time on the outcrop, plenty of time for discussion but no wasted time milling around either, great job done by all. And kudos to the drivers for watching out for their group. "
-Anonymous Geologist from Ossifrage Exploration Consulting LLC, Milos field course, Greece, April 2024

"I found the course to be very well organized in the way that material was covered and stops were laid out--each stop and day built off the one(s) that came before. I also really appreciated the learning environment fostered by the instructor and the other course participants. It was one that welcomed questions, observations, and discussions, and one that allowed people from all walks to share their own knowledge and experiences."
-Nicole Rioseco, Geologist, Metals Group, Milos field course, Greece, April 2024

"I really enjoyed the course, lectures and field training. Jocelyn is a fantastic teacher and geologist. Strongly recommended for understanding volcanology, terrains, facies and naming."
-Anonymous Geologist from Eldorado Gold, Milos field course, Greece, April 2024

"The course was one of the most practical and well-organised course that could be applicable to people struggling in the industries to properly map out volcanic rocks. It will be very helpful to set up logging guidelines of volcanic rocks. The instructor has a unique method of teaching complex geological phenomena in a simple manner.  In general, I would describe the course as one of the best course I ever had. The choice of the place was perfect because it contains a wide varieties of the volcanic rocks emplacement and volcanic phenomena. The timing of the course was also great as it hasn't been in conflict with the vacation weeks."
-Anonymous Geologist from Agnico Eagle, Milos field course, Greece, April 2024

"It was a great overview on the different types of volcanoes, eruptions, and how to recognize the lithified products of volcanoes to identify an ancient volcanic setting. I found it particularily useful and applicable to my own work currently. It has led me to think further on how the ancient environment can affect the emplacement of VMS deposits in particular (in terms of things like slopes and topography of the paleoseafloor)- in my company, the mineral deposit we are working on has only been thought of previously in terms of an orogenic origin- which seems to me more and more to not be the case. Dr. McPhie presents clearly and concisely."
-Mac Valliant, Junior Geologist, Troilus Gold Corp., Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, January 2024

"Course material was interesting but not too challenging that you lost interest. Jocelyn was kind, enthusiatic, and motivating. She delivered course materials in a clear and concise way which led to little confusion on the subjects being covered. The naming exercises were a great break from course material and a good chance to talk with others in the course about rocks and their experiences. "
-Brett Lemiski, Project Geologist, Brixton Metals Corporation, Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, January 2024

"Jocelyn has an unrivaled ability to explain and describe igneous/volcanic rocks and the genetic processes that created them. During my undergraduate studies I read several of her papers which I learnt much from. However, having her in the room is so much better. Thanks for the course, I got more out of a couple of days with her than a semester of undergrad."
-Anonymous, Perth (in-person), August 2023

The course organization, materials and presentation were absolutely fantastic. Image-rich, the way geology shortcourses should be.
-Philippe Cloutier, President & CEO, Cartier Resources- Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2022

The knowledge and command of the instructor was excellent. Course organization was very professional.
-Onur Gerdan, Geologist, Tumad Madencilik - Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2022

I was blown away by the course, really something special. I was first a bit sceptic how the webinar course format would work with this kind of subject but really it didn’t matter at all. And, that’s because of the top‐class lecturer. McPhie and the professional organization team of KLS. Thanks to all of you and I certainly will promote this course to my colleagues.

-Anonymous - Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2021

Dr. McPhie was very knowledgeable in the material and communicated the information easily and efficiently.  Course notes were good quality and information packed.  I think the way the course was broken down into different concepts for each lecture worked well.  I loved this shortcourse and was a fantastic refresher for those of us that work in volcanic terranes.  I learned a lot of new things that will be useful on a go-forward basis.  The four day format worked well since from my perspective, it allowed me to also keep up with my work duties in the morning before the course started each day.
-Rod Churchill, Lands & Operations Manager, Altius Resources Inc -
Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2021

This course is a good overall review of volcanology for exploration professionals. The  course material is well organized and Jocelyn is a patient and knowledgeable instructor. I felt like this was all stuff I essentially knew, but hadnt thought of in a while, and it was particularly concise and to the point demonstrating all of the appropriate components and their relationships. I enjoyed the breakdown of the class into 4 hour segments, allowing time for other work to occur and not exceeding my attention span.
-Scott Petsel, VP Exploration, Metallic Minerals / TruePoint - Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2021
