Description:
~
A
course for explorers that seeks an integrated approach to
structural geology and GIS for the 2D and 3D vectorization of mineral
deposits ~
The systematic
incorporation of structural aspects to the mapping and interpretation of
geological, geochemical and geophysical data at different scales is a
fundamental piece for selecting the area to be explored and, ultimately,
for the successful generation of exploration targets.
The main objective of this course is to understand modern
concepts of structural geology that can be applied to GIS to
characterize and target mineral deposits.
Practical sessions include techniques
for interpreting remote sensing data, including magnetometry, seismic
reflection, satellite imagery and digital elevation models. Special
emphasis is placed on the ability to recognize, outline and understand,
at different scales, the styles and types of fault and fracture
associated with the emplacement and architecture of porphyry and
epithermal systems.
Who should attend:
The course is intended for explorers who want to delve into a modern and
practical approach to structural geology that integrates tectonic,
geophysical, geochemical and metallogenic concepts for the vectorization
of mineral deposits.
The course includes digital and manual practical sessions on remote
sensing interpretation, map and cross section construction,
GIS spatial analysis
and stereographic techniques.

Dr. Matías Sánchez
is
a structural geologist, Director of Fault Rocks Inc., and has 20+
years of experience in mining exploration and research projects
of porphyry
and epithermal systems
in
Chile, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Turkey, Greece and Western
Canada. Matías graduated from Concepción University Chile,
completed an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Royal Holloway University
of London and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Mineral Deposit
Research Unit (MDRU), UBC. His specialty is integrated
interpretations of geological data, geophysics, satellite
imagery and elevation models for structural mapping and
frameworks generation for exploration. Matías continuously
develops practical GIS techniques for structural analysis,
publishes on structural geology and magnetic data interpretation
and teaches professional development courses for the mining
industry.

Past Course Comments:
"- Overall very good course and friendly
instructor - Instructor is very knowledgeable and engaging with
audience; he keeps the attendees engaged and interacts well with
everyone - Course was very well documented and illustrated; numerous
and quality field photos; various scales are used (continental to
centimetric-scale); map and section views; analog modeling examples;
good fractures and veins examples -> multiple supports/sources to
illustrate geometries and tectonic settings - The first part (Fault
syst. and controls on Min.) was a very good refresher, especially for
most non-structural geologists in the audience - Plenty of examples
from Porphyry and Epithermal settings, which are the specialty of the
instructor - The exercises on paper were very good and requested more
work from the audience - Right number of attendees to keep good
interactions" - William Gerber, Structural Specialist, Newmont
Corporation - Vancouver, Jan 2024
"It was an excellent course and Matias is a
great instructor! The seats were comfortable, the food & coffee was very
good." - Mike Muggridge, Geologist, MGM Geological Consulting-
Vancouver, Jan 2024
"The instructor was highly knowledgeable and
approachable. The material was well put together and presented and I
felt like I retained a lot. Structure has always been a weakness for
me and I really feel like I gained a much more practical understanding
of how to use my knowledge in the field." - Anonymous, Senior
Geologist, APEX Geoscience - Vancouver, Jan 2024
"The course was excellent, the
instructor showed total mastery of the subject and solved all the
doubts, the agenda was fulfilled in time and form. Congratulations
Matias for his excellent presentation." - Mauro Terrones Roman,
Geologo De Exploraciones, Compañía Minera Cuzcatlán - Vancouver, March 2019
"The organization was really nice. The place and location were
great, really nice zone and the UBC facilities really good. About the
instructor, Matias is a good speaker, a good academic way, lots of
interesting information. The power point and the manual was good as
well." - Óscar Dávalos, Geologo SR, Compañía Minera Cuzcatlán -
Vancouver, March 2019
"The course material is great, very
informative and I learned alot. I especially enjoyed the regional
geology component. The instructor is very knowledgeable and good at
teaching. Course organization was great." - Cole Spence, Geologist,
Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd. - Vancouver, March 2019
"Great breadth of material. Lots of detail. Good interaction with
the class. Applicable to different mineralization styles. Knowledge &
experience of instructor was evident. Lots of good references. Overall
very good!" - Nigel Phillps, Geophysicist,
Computational Geosciences - Vancouver, March 2019
"Fault
segmentation & relays was really good, really helped. Shear sense help
was good. Great slides and references." - Gerry Griesel, Senior
Geologist, Newmont - Vancouver, March 2019
"Great use of
real-life examples. The repetition of common concepts and mechanisms was
very helpful and useful." - Nader Mostaghimi, Structural Geology
Consultant, Fault Rocks Inc- Vancouver, March 2019
"Instructor
has broad knowledge of subject matter. Course material includes lots of
photos - very useful that the instructor breaks down the photos &
interprets them together w/ the class. Instructor is knowledgable on
porphyry copper deposits. Instructor shared useful mobile apps & desktop
apps that is relevant to industry; also useful is instructor drawing on
the whiteboard." - Anonymous - Vancouver, March 2019
"Good course to learn the structural geology front major to minor view
points. Good course to learn the theory to the real, thanks to the
many good examples." - Anonymous - Vancouver, March 2019
