Introduction This short course helps participants to develop the knowledge and skills required for exploring, mining or researching in volcanic terrains. It combines fundamental information on how volcanoes work and what they produce, and practical information on how to name, describe and log volcanic facies, including altered volcanic facies, in the field and in drill core. The relationships between volcanic and ore forming processes are reviewed for important volcanic-associated ore deposit types (VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au, komatiite-hosted Ni, kimberlite-hosted diamonds).
Course Format and Delivery The short course will run for four days, two of which will be spent in the field. Lectures will cover ore deposit types commonly hosted by volcanic successions, kinds of volcanoes, eruption styles and products on land and under water, effects of hydrothermal alteration on volcanic rocks, and breccias in mineralised volcanic environments.
The field days will focus on the Tertiary volcanic units exposed along the Maipo valley close to Santiago. The Maipo valley section includes a wide variety of both fresh and variably altered volcanic and subvolcanic units. The first field day will provide practice in naming, describing and interpreting a variety of volcanic facies using outcrop and hand sample characteristics. The second day will involve graphic logging of a section of volcanic facies and will develop skills in understanding facies architecture, depositional environments, proximity to source vents, and the distinction between hydrothermal and diagenetic alteration.
The course is presented and taught in English. There will also be opportunities to discuss concepts in Spanish with the volcanology assistant, Dr. Jose Piquer Romo. Dr. Piquer is a Professor and Researcher at Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia, Chile. Dr. Piquer recently completed his PhD at CODES, University of Tasmania, where the the subject of his PhD project was that of the geology of the Andes of central Chile, including the Maipo Valley. Also before CODES, he worked for eight years doing mineral exploration in the Mio-Pliocene metallogenic belt of central Chile.
Who should attend
This course is intended for geologists engaged in regional- or
deposit-scale mapping or in drilling programs in volcanic successions for the purpose of mineral
exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au, komatiite
Ni, or diamonds) and for geological survey geologists embarking on
mapping projects in volcanic successions. No prior volcanology training
is an Adjunct Professor at the University of
Tasmania and Principal Consultant in McPhie Volcanology. She is a world
leader in the application of volcanology to the exploration for mineral
deposits. She has developed practical techniques to unravel the complex
geology of volcanic terrains
particular expertise in textural interpretation of altered volcanic
rocks, volcanic facies analysis, volcanic eruption and emplacement
processes, and volcanic influences on ore formation.
Her research contributes directly to the knowledge and understanding of
fundamental physical volcanology, and the links between volcanic and
hydrothermal processes. She has published more than
80 papers in peer-reviewed
international journals, and is senior author of the book,
Volcanic Textures, widely used by
academic and industry geoscientists working in volcanic successions.
