Description Two (2) days of power point lectures and two (2) days of field visits. The lectures use Pacific rim examples to discuss the nature of epithermal and porphyry ore deposits as an aid to mineral exploration. After some introductory comments on classification, setting of formation and hydrothermal fluids, more time is devoted to analyses of hydrothermal alteration, structure and breccia classification, as some important tools used in exploration. Having provided this framework, the controls to mineralisation and ore styles are considered for low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag within magmatic arcs and more strongly extensional settings, along with high sulphidation epithermal Au, and the localised transition from high to lower sulphidation Au. The ore forming processes of porphyry Cu-Au and skarn deposits are examined using their staged evolution as an aid to exploration. The field visits will give examples of four (4) different mineralization styles: Low
sulphidation epithermal Au - Kestanelik deposit High
sulphidation epithermal Au - Kartaldag deposit Copper-gold
porphyry - Halilaga deposit Who should attend This course is aimed at exploration geologists ranging from new graduates who will benefit from a presentation of the basic principles, to more advanced players who will appreciate discussion of some recent ideas on the evolution of these deposits and Dr. Corbett’s approach to mineral exploration. All the deposit types are considered from the field perspective using exploration examples. Dr Greg Corbett has over 30 years experience as a consultant exploration geologist working in Pacific rim epithermal and porphyry ore deposits. His original training as a structural geologist, followed by many years working with the late Terry Leach, a petrologist with experience in the Philippine magmatic arc geothermal systems, provide a unique perspective to these deposits. Greg and Terry presented SW Pacific rim short courses in the 1990’s (over 20 presentations in 12 countries), the notes for which were published as Economic Geology Special Publication 6, 1998. A new short course manual with colour rock photos is in preparation and will be published free on line by the Australian Institute of Geoscientists.
